Life in Winter on the Hill (- Text in Deutsch unten)

In Winter we feel sometimes even farer away from civilisation. Its a very romantic feeling, but some task getting very hard. Also the village is just 2km away from us, including around 100 meter in high, it can be quite far away when you have to go by foot in deep snow. Than every step is a act of pure power and already after short time you can feel your muscles.

Therefore we prepare us good for the winter as we know we cant bring anything up by car. The food for animals need to be stored in sufficient amount. This includes dog and cat food, cereals for chickens and of course enough food for us.

Specially basic food like flour, pasta and potatoes (we had not so many in the garden this year). Also we have lots of food cooked in glasses. The parents of my wife have also a family garden and prepare there lots of vegetables, tomatoe sauce and fruits in glasses.

But anyway several times in winter I am going to the village for little shopping and I take all what I can carry in my backpack. I try of course not to go only for shopping. There is always something more what need to be done.

The waste we have to bring down to the waste bin. Therefore we try to reduce our waste as its not such pleasure to carry this waste bag 2km down the hill. Best way of reduce the waste is to produce as much by ourself as possible. And we hold us back with unnecessary consumption of goods.

The post box is located in the village under the hill and need to be picked from time to time. No postman would come up every time we have a letter.

The woman working in the village post office know us already and gives us also the post of our neighbour. Or opposite the post from us to our neighbour to help each other.

One event we never forget. It was already three years ago as it happened. In the early evening someone was knocking on our door. We were very wondering who this could be.

As we had a look out of the window we saw a UPS man in front of our door with a package for us. We couldn't believe. He was really climbing up the hill to us to deliver the package. We gave him of course a good tip.

Since this time he remembers also we have just once a year a delivery from UPS. Last year once he was here and was driving with his big delivery car to our neighbour Jarosh. Surprised us also that he can come with such big van up the hill. Surly not easy without 4x4.

In winter the children of my woman from first marriage staying usual at father in the city during the week. Than they have it easier to come to school. So they are only for weekend at us. And often take the bus on monday morning. There we can connect the way to bus with little fun. They use just the slide to come down and have also fun.

Now it just happened that the son came from school and was very ill with fever. At this time he needs the most mummy. She is also very good in alternative medicine and can care very good for children.

Just the question was how to come to us. This winter we have very much snow. Its more than one meter, and partly with the wind blows its going quite deep.

Lucky us that my woman is very good in organising. The father brought the child to the village. After short call with our neighbour he agreed to help and drive my woman down to the village. This neighbour has a tractor and is living on approximately half high of the hill. And as he is cleaning the road to his house he is able to drive with his car.

When our neighbour Jarosh saw the little boy so powerless and ill he also offered to bring him up on his tractor to us. In the deep snow not an easy thing. Also with chains on all tires of the tractor. That its a 4x4 Tractor is of course usual on the mountain.

So he went always few centimetres in front the deep snow and had to go back to take new power to move few centimetres farer.

Good that he is such experience driver. When you sit on his tractor he always likes to tell you the story that he already few times turned with his tractor in the hill. But good that I dont understand so good the language.

We are happy to have such good person as neighbour. Without his help we would be often lost here with bringing material up.

The weather forecast announced warning of very cold weather. It is already -10 degrees in the night the last days. Now it should get down to -15 degrees.

Always when there is a weather warning and its getting extreme we see what we can prepare. Especially we have to count not to have electricity from the grid.

The energy company just made the electric sticks and line new in 2018. Since this time there are much less that we have no electric. But here its not unusal that there is bigger problem and whole area has whole day no electric. Or they turn it of for few hours because of some maintenance.

I was always wondering how the thousands of people survive when electric is 8 hours away. How the companies do it and what do to with all the things in refrigerators. But ok thats not my business...

There we are happy to have our solar system as support and back up. This I plan to extend. Only in the winter its not very usefull when the sun is for days or whole week not visible. There could be a wind turbine a clever addition.

With water we are little addicted to electricity for our water pump. But we have luck and also without electric we can use the open dwell. There we can go with canister to take drinking water. Its just not so comfortable.

So at this time I directly fill two canister with water not to carry so much from dwell. This is of course only for worst case. With animals and our daily needs we have a little water consumption

For heating we use only wood from own forest. Cooking we do mainly also on wood fire. With our oven we are very happy not only because we have very low wood consumption for heating. This results in less work with making fire wood. Also its good for environment as less wood consumption means also less emissions.

I also have to take care that the water pipes from our own dwell are not freezing. The technical rooms needs heating. Here I use an electrical heater as it has no connection with our house. Maybe I will find there a more clever solution.

The year before when it became so cold our pipes were once frozen. Than its latest time to act. If the freezing continues the pipes can burst and result in even bigger damage. With little baby at home and no water the life is quite hard.

Our neighbour Honza was so nice to save us. At this time was no snow. What was maybe also reason that some isolation was missing at the dwell.

First we unfolded the pipes in the dwell what is under ground, covered with a big beton stone. He brought his hot air fan pistol. The pipes in the technical room where they come in where also frozen. Here was it also necessary to unfold it and unfreeze them. Folding them all together at the end was not so totally easy and after first turning on we saw there was something wrong.

It needed one more time unfolding and correct the connection of the plastic pipes. Now the pipes where of course again full of water what all came out at unfolding. The neighbour as already little wet and as you can imaging it was very cold. So cold that the pipes where frozen.

We felt really sorry for him and we where so thankful. Everything was working again perfectly at the end.

Therefore I wanted to be better prepared for this winter. I was working on the isolation on technical room. Only the thin wooden door is still weak point. I bought also such hot air pistol for the case it will freeze again.

In our old cottage we have unfortunately also still water connection. But as this house is very rotten and the wooden walls are not isolation good any longer there is always danger that the pipe is ripping and our whole water have to be turned off.

Whole summer I was not thinking about to fix this weak point in our water installation. The plan is anyway to ruin this old cottage.

I ordered now also a package. My birthday present. To receive this package I need always my woman's great organisation talent. In summer it would be not so problematic to come quickly down by care when the delivery service announce himself. Of course you also have to agree this before with the driver that he call you before.

In winter its not so easy. We have also a friend here in next village what is an option. This time we agreed with the driver he will come under the hill and call 30min before.

Going downhill is usually easier and quicker. Also we have this winter lots of snow, I was very quick down to meet the parcel service and receive my package.

Just the way up takes little longer. Of course I take directly the dog with me, so the walk with her is also done.

Leben auf dem Berg im Winter

Im Winter fühlen wir uns der Zivilisation noch ferner. Es ist ein sehr romantisches Gefühl, aber bedeutet auch mehr Arbeit für uns. Auch wenn die nächste Ortschaft nur 2km und 100 Höhenmeter unterschied entfernt ist, kann das sehr weit sein wenn man zu Fuß in tiefen Schnee gehen muss. Da ist jeder Schritt ein Kraftakt und schon nach kurzer Zeit fühlt man seine Muskeln.

Da wir bei diesen Bedingung nicht mehr mit dem Auto bis zum Haus kommen bereiten wir uns gut vor. Ausreichend Tierfutter für Hund und Katzen muss auf Lager sein. Weizen und anderes Getreide für das Geflügel. Und nicht zuletzt auch genug Lebensmittel für uns selbst.

Insbesondere Grundnahrungsmittel wie Mehl, Pasta und Kartoffeln (wir hatten nicht so viele im Garten dieses Jahr) kaufen wir ein. Wir haben natürlich auch viel Eingekocht. Die Schwiegereltern haben auch einen Familiengarten und kochen viel für uns ein wie z.B. Tomatensauce, Gemüse und Früchte.

Trotzdem muss ich im Winter einige male ins Dorf gehen und einkaufen so viel ich in meinem Rucksack tragen kann. Daher versuchen wir natürlich so viel wie möglich miteinander zu verbinden.

Den Abfall müssen wir natürlich auch runter tragen zum nächsten Müllcontainer. Darum versuchen wir natürlich so gut es geht Müll zu vermeiden und zu reduzieren weil es macht wirklich kein Spaß die Müllsäcke 2km weit ins Dorf zu tragen. Am besten ist es natürlich so viel wie Möglich selbst herzustellen. Und wir halten uns mit unnötigen Konsum zurück.

Der Briefkasten für uns befindet sich auch unten im Ort und wir sehen dort auch regelmäßig nach. Kein Briefträger kommt für jeden Brief zu uns auf den Berg hoch.

Die Dame im Postbüro kennt uns bereits und gibt uns auch Post für unsere Nachbarn mit. Oder umgekehrt gibt sie unsere Post den Nachbarn mit.

Einmal hatten wir ein wirklich unvergessliches Erlebnis vor drei Jahren als es am frühen Abend an unserer Tür klopfte. Wir waren sehr verwundert wer das sein könnte.

Als wir aus dem Fenster sahen war dort ein UPS Bote mit einem Paket für uns. Wir konnten es kaum glauben, aber er ist wirklich zu Fuß den Berg hoch um uns das Paket zu bringen. Da haben wir Ihm natürlich ein gute Trinkgeld gegeben.

Seitdem erinnert er sich an uns, auch wenn wir und einmal im Jahr ein Paket von UPS bekommen. Letztes Jahr ist er mit seinen großen Lieferwagen bis zu unseren Nachbarn Jarosh gekommen. Das hat mich auch sehr überrascht das er auch ohne Allrad dort hochgekommen ist. Das war sicher nicht einfach.

Im Winter bleiben die Kinder meiner Frau aus erster Ehe gewöhnlich beim Vater in der Stadt damit sie leichter zur Schule kommen. Die Kinder sind dann nur am Wochenende bei uns. Nur am Montag morgen nehmen sie dann den Bus zur Schule. Da können wir dann den Weg zum Bus mit etwas freude verbinden. Auf dem Schlitten den Berg runter fahren macht ihnen Spaß.

Vor kurzem war der Sohn leider krank mit Schnupfen und Fieber als er von der Schule heim kam. Da brauchte er natürlich die Mami die ihn gesund pflegt. Vierka ist auch sehr gut mit alternativer Medizin und kann sich gut um die Kinder kümmern.

Jetzt blieb nur die Frage wie er zu uns kommt so kraftlos wie er war. Wir haben diesen Winter sehr viel Schnee. Teilweise mehr als ein Meter, besonders an Stellen wo der Wind bläst.

Gut das meine Frau ein Organisationstalent ist. Der Vater hat den Sohn ins Dorf gebracht und mit unseren Nachbarn Jarosh vereinbart das er sie ins Dorf fährt und mit auf den Berg nimmt. Der Nachbar räumt seinen Weg mit dem Traktor, so das der Weg noch mit dem Auto befahrbar ist. Jarosh wohnt allerdings nur auf ca. halber Höhe auf dem Berg.

Als er dann den Sohn so krank gesehen hat, hat er gleich angeboten ihn mit seinem Traktor hoch zu uns zu fahren. Bei dem tiefen Schnee kein leichtes unterfangen obwohl der Traktor Allradantrieb hat und Ketten auf allen vier Reifen.

Daher konnte er nur immer einige Zentimeter nach vorne fahren und musste zurück um neuen Schwung zu holen. So ging es dann Stück für Stück den Berg im tiefen Schnee hoch.

Gut das er so ein erfahrener Fahrer ist. Nur wenn man bei ihm auf dem Traktor sitzt erzählt er gerne mal die Story das er schon ein paar mal am Berg mit dem Traktor umgekippt ist. Aber gut das meine Sprachkenntnisse noch nicht so gut sind das ich das alles verstehe.

Wir sind natürlich froh so einen hilfsbereiten Nachbarn zu haben. Ohne seine Hilfe wären wir hier manchmal verloren mit unseren Materialtransport zum Haus.

Der Wetterbericht hat jetzt wieder eine Warnung vor kalten Wetter heraus gegeben. Es hat bereits die letzten Tage -10 Grad in der Nacht. Jetzt soll es bis -15 Grad kalt werden.

Immer wenn das Wetter etwas extremer wird sehe ich wo ich uns besser vorbereiten kann. Da muss man auch damit rechnen keinen Strom vom Netz zu haben.

Der Energieversorger hat zwar gerade erst in 2018 die Strommasten und die Leitung erneuert. Seitdem haben wir weniger oft einen Stromausfall. Aber hier ist es nicht unüblich das es größere Probleme gibt und das ganze Gebiet keinen Strom hat. Oder wenn sie Wartungsarbeiten machen kann auch schon mal der Strom den ganzen Tag abgeschaltet werden.

Ich wundere mich dann wie das die tausende Leute hier machen wenn 8 Stunden kein Strom im Netz ist. Wie können die Firmen weiterarbeiten? Und was passiert mit den ganzen Sachen in der Tiefkühltruhe? Aber gut das ist nicht mein Problem....

Daher sind wir sehr froh jetzt eine kleine Solaranlage als Unterstützung und Backup zu haben. Ich plane die Anlage noch etwas zu erweitern. Nur im Winter wenn es tagelang oder sogar eine ganze Woche lang dunkel ist, ist die Anlage natürlich keine Unterstützung. Da wäre vielleicht noch ein Windrad eine gute Ergänzung.

Mit unserer Trinkwasserversorgung sind wir etwas Abhängig vom Stromnetz. Aber im Notfall können wir das Trinkwasser auch mit dem Kanister aus der nahe gelegenen offenen Quelle holen. Es ist halt nur mehr Arbeit und ein Komfortverlust.

Daher fülle ich als Reserve zwei Kanister mit Wasser ab um nicht so viel tragen zu müssen wenn der Strom ausfällt. Mit unseren Tieren und auch unseren Bedarf kommt doch schon einiges an Wasserverbrauch zusammen.

Zum heizen haben wir unseren tollen Kachel-Grundofen. Das kochen machen wir auch hauptsächlich auf der Feuerstelle in der Küche. Unser Ofen verbraucht sehr wenig Holz um unser Haus warm zu halten. Das macht weniger Arbeit beim Brennholzschneiden und ist auch gut für die Umwelt wenn wir weniger Holz verbrennen müssen.

Auch müssen wir sehen das die Wasserleitungen nicht einfrieren. Der Technikraum bei uns muss beheizt werden. Dafür nutzte ich einen elektrischer Heizer, da der Raum nicht mit dem Rest vom Haus verbunden ist. Vielleicht finde ich hier auch noch eine bessere Lösung.

Im Jahr zuvor als es so kalt wurde sind uns einmal die Leitungen eingefroren. Spätesten dann muss man sofort handeln damit die Leitungen nicht platzen und so einen größeren Schaden verursachen. Mit einem Kleinkind zu Hause und kein Wasser ist es dann nicht so leicht.

Unser Nachbar Honza war so nett und hat uns aus der Not gerettet. Zu der Zeit war kein Schnee und somit hat wohl etwas die isolierende Schneeschicht auf der Quelle gefehlt.

Wir mussten also erst mal die Leitungen in der Quelle auseinander bauen. Die liegt in gut einem Meter tiefe bedeckt von einen schweren Betonstein. Mit der Heißluftpistole wurde dann die Rohre so lang aufgeheizt bis sich das Eis gelöst hat. Auch im Technikraum waren die Rohre etwas gefroren und mussten erst mal aufgetaut werden. Das zusammen bauen war dann gar nicht so leicht und nach dem ersten anstellen der Pumpe sahen wir das etwas nicht ganz dicht war.

Also mussten wir an einer Stelle in der Quelle die Rohrverbindung prüfen. Jetzt war das Rohr natürlich voll Wasser. Unser Nachbar war schon ganz nass und wir hatten wirklich ein schlechtes gewissen.

Als am Schluss alles wieder funktionierte waren wir überglücklich und sehr dankbar für die Hilfe.

Daher wollte ich diesen Winter besser vorbereitet sein. Ich habe die Isolation im Technikraum verbessert. Jetzt ist nur noch die dünne Holztüre eine Schwachstelle. Auch habe ich mir so eine Heißluftpistole zugelegt um im Ernstfall rechtzeitig reagieren zu können.

In der alten Hütte ist leider auch noch ein Wasseranschluss. Die Hütte hat schon sehr marode Wände und diese isolieren demnach auch nicht mehr sehr gut. Da besteht die Gefahr das dort die Leitung einfriert und beschädigt wird und somit unsere ganze Wasserversorgung lahm legt.

Den ganzen Sommer habe ich es verdrängt das hier Handlungsbedarf besteht. Die Hütte planen wir ab zu reißen.

Ich habe mal wieder ein Paket bestellt. Mein Geburtstagsgeschenk. Allerdings benötige ich immer das gute Organisationstalent meiner Frau um an das Paket zu kommen. Im Sommer ist es nicht so ein Problem mit dem Auto schnell ins Dorf zu kommen wenn der Paketbote da ist. Das muss natürlich auch vorher mit dem Fahrer abgesprochen werden.

Im Winter ist das etwas komplizierter. Wir haben eine Bekannte die nicht weit von hier wohnt und das Paket annehmen könnte. Dieses mal haben wir mit dem Fahrer vereinbart das er uns 30 Minuten vorher anruft bevor er unten am Berg ankommt.

Den Berg bin ich auch zu Fuß sehr schnell. Auch im tiefen Schnee war ich noch rechtzeitig unten um das Paket in Empfang zu nehmen.

Nur wieder den Berg hoch kommen war sehr anstrengend. Aber wie immer habe ich es gleich mit dem spazieren gehen mit Maya verbunden.
